After releasing Voodoo in 2000, D’Angelo set up the international Voodoo Tour with his supergroup session band, the Soultronics (Pino Palladino on bass, Roy Hargrove on trumpet, James Poyser on keys and directed by ?uestlove, also the group’s drummer). Things got ridiculous. Some shows lasted for more than three hours, nearly every venue sold out, and the group pumped out new spins on many of the Voodoo tunes, including Feel Like Makin’ Love (originally by Roberta Flack). Roberta’s original version is very mellow, as is D’s studio cover. But the version I came across–from one of the shows in Stockholm–is just filth. The Soultronics–Pino in particular–turns the song into a DIRTY funk tune, equipped with back-up vocalists and a full horn section. The recording is a bit raw, but I think you’ll get the message.
