Warren G and G Funk

It has been hotly debated who is the founding father of G Funk. Warren G will insist that it was his creation. A lot of people think Dr. Dre (by releasing “The Chronic”) kicked off the G Funk era. G Funk, short for Gangsta Funk, basically involves the deep pitching down of funk samples, with rap thrown on top. To me, the most iconic G Funk song has got to be “Regulate” by Warren G ft. Nate Dogg, which samples “I Keep Forgettin’ (Every Time You’re Near) by Michael McDonald. “Regulate” features Nate Dogg in his prime, when he had mastered the art of talking in a low voice on key and making it sound bad ass. Anyway, the song is hood…check it out. And check out the Michael McDonald original!
