I never intended to post about movies, but the rise of the Manic Pixie Dream Girl (MPDG) in recent cinema inspired me. Typically, the Manic Pixie Dream Girl serves as the eccentric, quirky, slightly indie one-dimensional love interest for the slightly depressed male protagonist. Usually, this male character is very aware he is “deep” and assumes (until he meets the MPDG of course) that no one in life could ever come to understand this “depth”.
There are several classic Manic Pixie Dream Girls. Natalie Portman in Garden State comes to mind. Kate Hudson, Almost Famous. I hope you’re getting the picture. For more notable MPDGs, visit: http://www.avclub.com/articles/wild-things-16-films-featuring-manic-pixie-dream-g,2407/
In honor of Manic Pixie Dream Girls, here are some songs from their collective soundtrack (mostly taken (where else?) but from the Garden State soundtrack):
“New Slang” by the Shins: Natalie Portman, Garden State
“America” by Simon and Garfunkel: Kate Hudson, Almost Famous
“Angeles” by Elliot Smith: Minnie Driver, Good Will Hunting
