The last post reminded me about the whistling in (Sittin’ On) The Dock of the Bay by Otis Redding. He recorded the song a few weeks before he died, and never got to finish it fully. As it turns out, the whistling was not supposed to be a part of the finished song. He hadn’t written the verse for that section of the song at the time of the session, so he just whistled out the way he wanted the lyrics to sound. He died before he could re-record the verse, and his label ended up just keeping the whistling in. I can’t imagine the song without it.
Since I’m currently interning for the record label who owns this song, I’m going to hold back from posting where to download it for free. I’m sure it’s out there somewhere.
