Peg (De La Soul, Steely Dan)

Before Steely Dan was Steely Dan, they were called The Leather Canary and Chevy Chase was their drummer. Fortunately something happened to change that. They also were sampled from time to time (albeit sparingly). Here’s their song “Peg” followed up by “Eye Know” by De La Soul, where Peg is sampled. “Sittin’ on the Dock of the Bay” by Otis Redding is also sampled in “Eye Know” (the whistling). De La is definitely up there among the top samplers of all time–just check out 3 Feet High and Rising to see what I’m talking about.

It amazes me how few of the players in Steely Dan were actually members of the band. Don’t get me wrong, I love Steely Dan’s work for the first eight years of their career. But this group was dependent on outside talent to give flavor to their best songs.
